Stay Calm…

How is it possible that words that sounded so good three months ago suddenly seem clunky and ineffective? What was supposed to be minor revising is turning into a bit of an overhaul. Or maybe it just seems that way. Is it possible to make a novel worse during the revision process? Maybe so, but not irrevocably, right? I mean, you can always revert back to the original version, worst-case scenario. Perhaps I’m being a bit dramatic. Or paranoid. Or both. Truth be told, as much as I worry, it doesn’t feel like I’m making things worse. It feels like a step in the right direction. So I should take that as a good sign.

  1. Dina,

    Repeat these words
It’s a part of a process, part of a process. Process. It might feel like you’re axing your first-born to pieces but in fact “he / she” is growing up.

    Good luck.

  2. Occasionally I look back at something written months before and am a bit in awe that I actually found such appropriate words. Most times however, as you’re experiencing, I’m shocked at how bad it sounds. That’s what revisions are all about… and no, I don’t think there’s any chance of making things worse. My dilemma is knowing when to stop the tweaking and let it go. It never feels quite good enough.
