Dear Yolanda,
Hi! I’m probably the last person you want to hear from right now, but I just wanted to write you a quick note to let you know how sorry I am to have had to cut you from Baby Grand. You are an astute, hard-working woman, with lots of derring-do, and I’m sure you’ll turn up in another piece down the road. In the end, the subplot that I had in store for you didn’t feel right, and the chapters involving your character seemed contrived and circuitous. I had to cut to the chase.
Please know that this in no way is a reflection of your character, but of my inability to properly integrate that character seamlessly into the novel.
In other words, it’s not you. It’s me.
Sincerely,
Dina

Oh Dina — This is great! The letter is a brilliant way to let this character go so you can keep moving forward! :)
Ha. Clever. Reminded me of Harold Crick and his narrator.
